Cemetery Tour – There’s History in the Artwork

“Gravestone Art and Symbols” is the topic of a tour of the Old Milford Cemetery that will take place on Sat., June 8 at 1 p.m. Guides will be members of the Friends of Milford Cemetery, a volunteer group formed 10 years ago.

Tickets cost $5 and may be purchased the day of the event. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by adults. Parking is available in the DAR parking lot, 55 Prospect St. The rain date is Sat., June 15.

The FOMC works to clean gravestones, mark veterans’ graves, restore/relocate stones, and answer questions for people tracing their ancestry.

Going forward, there are plans to replace the weather-worn map in the cemetery that lists burial locations. Members of the Botsford Family Historical Association contacted FOMC and offered to pay for a new map. One of the original founders of Milford in 1639 was Henry Botsford.

At its recent Annual Meeting officers for the 2024-2025 year were elected: President, Jenn Lugus; Vice President and Treasurer, Lloyd Jacobs, and Secretary, Cheryl Cappiali. Members-at-Large are Richard Platt, Jane Platt, Arthur Stowe, Meredith Stowe, Bill McDonald, and Marilyn May.

FOMC is part of the Milford Cemetery Association, and Ray Scholl, Superintendent of Milford Cemeteries, is an adviser to the group.

The Old Milford Cemetery is the oldest graveyard in the country still being used for burials.

Join the Giggling Pig for an evening of family fun.  Legend has it that more than 50 Fairies call Walnut Beach Home!  It’s a magical place where they feel safe!  The summer solstice is the night when they allow you to see where they live…but only if you believe!

Wee ones and adults alike are encouraged to dress in your finest fairly attire and wings and search for fairy doors and abodes.  Bring bells to let fairies know you are near, and it is said if you leave a small found item (they love tiny shells, rocks and flowers) at their doors, the fairy will grant you a sweet dream!  Enjoy vendors, face painting, hula-hooping, children’s activities, character appearances and more!
