The report, published annually by Save the Sound, uses 3-year data to highlight recent changes in water quality along Long Island Sound beaches in both Connecticut and New York.

Walnut Beach showed a decline in water quality over the previous report released in 2023.  While improving from a C- in 2021 to A+ in 2022 and 2023, this year overall quality was rated a B. Collections taken during both wet and dry weather conditions were reflected in this decline, and it was several minor failures in wet weather testing data which reflected this decline (see p.21).

Meanwhile, water quality at neighboring Silver Sands State Park rose remarkably, ping from a B+ in 2023 to A+ in 2025!  Both wet and dry conditions contributed to this score.

These results are based on state-mandated water quality testing by local municipalities, and the results are influenced by a variety of environmental factors.  To learn more about what impacts our water quality, and what we can all do to help, download a copy of this year’s free report from Save the Sound…
